Witty, the dog from the Kirkinittys, never
barked. Somehow that sounds impossible, his voice box was not broken, he
simply was too disquieted to bark, or to play with a ball, or do anything
standard a normal dog would do, except eat when it was time. The Kirkinittys
took no notice of him, only occasional giving him a stroke when they were
especially happy; a rarity as they seemed mostly subdued.
It was a cool, cloudy, day, Witty was
sniffing about outside in the garden the second occupation he had other than
eat. Suddenly, he head rocketed up, at the sight of Mr. Kirkinitty bursting out of the
front door of the house with an axe, making haste towards the only tree in the
garden. Behind him was the son of the Kirkinittys, Matthew, flustered that his
father was actually intending to cut down the only tree in the garden which held Matthew’s tree house. He fulminated at the idea, while Witty simply
watched at always, never truly understanding the reasoning for these
situations. He did think about where Mrs. Kirkinitty was, wouldn’t she have an
opinion about what Mr. Kirkinitty was so troubled about.
The men where still arguing, Mr.
Kirkinitty slowly but constantly raising his axe. Witty started to look
shrewdly at the cold situation understanding that Matthew wasn’t happy with his father, while Mr. Kirkinitty seemed to be unreasonable. Then, although he had
never done it before or had no idea why now in particular he decided to do so,
Witty barked at Mr. Kirkinitty to stop. Five barks, which made the two men
freeze and stare straight at Witty. Witty felt incredibly nervous as he always
did once all the attention was given to him. Matthew knelt down in front of him
stroked his forehead, seeming proud of what Witty had finally done. Mr.
Kirkinitty lowered his axe and dropped it on the grass almost appearing to have
forgotten why he was angry.
Later that day Witty, Matthew and Mr. Kirkinitty
went for a pleasant walk in the park. Witty felt
happy but believed it wasn’t over yet, Mr. Kirkinitty could still act
unreasonable and upset his family. However, Witty now knew what he should do in
order to try to calm him down.
